HUGOS MANLY

DESIGN EXTRA - Squillace Nicholas Architects

The new Hugos Restaurant and Bar is a seamless addition to the historical Manly Wharf environment. Designed by Squillace Nicholas Architects who are experienced hospitality designers, its use of layered timber materials, robust finishes and adaptable detailing is reminiscent of traditional wharfs and boatsheds.

This authentic atmosphere is continued internally with decking board lined banquettes and loose furniture, and ship lapped wall linings. The brashness of the timber fit out is offset by softness of the leather upholstery, cane chairs, vibrant cushions and mood lighting. The effect is of a boat on land, moored at the waterfront for the merriment of locals and commuters. The heritage ship lapping that characterizes the wharf extends into the interior of the spaces whilst the retractable windows can be completely concealed.

The verandah features recycled timbers and becomes an integral part of the presentation and function of the space. Most of the time, the venue may completely open up to it's environment thus blurring the line between contained and open spaces whilst at other times, the windows, and external retractable sun screens afford the protection required by harsh rain, wind or sun.
